Hob and the Miaousprits

Low fire clay, underglaze, wool roving, pom pom

9” x 11” x 17.75”

NFS

2022

I first drew these friendly critters in 2021, and the image of little cat spirits sitting on a goblin dressed in a colorful patterned shirt and pink corduroy pants would not leave me alone. The “miaousprits” stare at Hob, each of them dressed in colorful cloaks and tiny birthday hats, and the space between them and the goblin becomes activated. This work is made from low-fire clay, underglaze, and wool roving. The display features a paper-mache hill form which I placed over a heavy bucket in order to maintain stability.

Little Bug and Her Friends

Low fire clay, underglaze, terra sigillata, mixed materials

17” x 19” x 33”

2022

Little Bug and Her Friends depicts Little Bug releasing a pink worm with a party hat back into the fluffy grass, as the rest of her wriggling friends reside in her shiny red bucket. I used low-fire clay, glittery string, and wool roving for this work, as well as iridescent cellophane shrink-wrapped onto wire for Little Bug’s crinkly wings. For display, I used green spraypaint to paint stuffing and poly-fil, and glued it onto a chickenwire frame I sculpted over an old end table.

2022

In this work, a small imp-like child sits on the edge of a chair, her body covered by a soft pink blanket holding a birthday cupcake in her hands while wearing floppy rainbow toe socks. I used low-fire clay, underglaze, pipe cleaners and pom poms (for fluffy candles and their flames, of course) to finish this sculpture, and displayed Pink Blankie sitting on my baby blanket from which the piece is inspired. The chair she sits upon was actually from the library I used to go to story-time at as a child, which has now been rebuilt. This handpainted Dr. Seuss chair was given away by the library, and it was perfect for Pink Blankie.

These nine puppets were each created with low-fire clay, needle felted pompoms, and fabrics and buttons given to me by my mother. Using familial materials for these toy objects gives them a deeper sense of lineage and nostalgia. Each puppet represents a fable figure; the monkey is naive, while the goblin is quick-tempered. These puppets are intended for careful play and performance, each puppet interacting with another to create a story.

The Twins

Low-fire clay, underglaze, mixed materials

15” x 12” x 19” and 16” x 11.5” x 18.75”.

NFS

2021

The Twins consists of two sculptures mirroring each other. Moon (left) and Sun (right) are sister and brother. This work represents the childhood sentiment of kinship, sisterhood, and brotherhood. The work maintains a quiet and somber feeling. I have created batons with painted dowels, crafted pompoms out of foam and fiber paste, and attached pompoms to the shoes and the baubles’ hoods.

Lidelle and the Cloud and Wistette and the Star

Low-fire clay, underglaze, mixed materials

10” x 12” x 28” and 12” x 12” x 37”

NFS

2021

Lidelle the Clown (left) stands upon a cloud, lovingly holding a cloud creature in its arms. The piece is ceramic, but a red pompom is attached to the birthday hat. Lidelle represents the child that lives in all of us. They wish to convey a symbiosis between humanity and the “other”. This sculpture is a multi-piece work attached to a cloud-shaped platform. Lidelle wears a turquoise-colored tunic with colorful shapes decorating its surface as well as orange corduroy pants and striped socks. Lidelle also wears a purple and turquoise polka-dotted birthday hat.

Wistette the Jester (right) holds a star creature in her arms. Two faux pompoms, fabricated from foam and fiber paste are attached to Wistette’s hood. Two pompoms are attached to her shoes. A companion piece to Lidelle and the Cloud, this work represents celestial motherly wisdom conceived from care and kindness. Wistette’s fantastical outfit includes puffy striped sleeves, a pointy yellow collar, and tall purple jester shoes.

Freddie’s Birthday Party

Earthenware, underglaze, mixed materials

10.75” x 22” x 17.75”

NFS

2021

This piece consists of a large ceramic slab painted with green terra sigillata. A round kiddie table is attached to the slab, atop which sits a birthday cake made of clay with toothpick candles and three ceramic plates holding slices of cake. A bunny, moth, and frog sit on chairs around the table.
